Boulder has this magic where everything feels big but also calm. The mountains are dramatic, but the vibe is slow and easy.
We’re not rushing through a crowded park or forcing stiff poses. We’re wandering, watching the light move across the foothills, letting kids run, letting parents breathe.
Sessions here feel more like an evening outside together and less like a “photo appointment.” And that’s usually when the best stuff happens anyway to make the perfect photos for your family.
Boulder families tend to show up ready. Ready to hike a little, ready to let the kids get dusty, ready to trust the process. There’s less pressure to “perform” and more openness to just being together.
I love that we can start on a trail, end up on a rock, and somewhere in between your toddler is collecting sticks while your almost-senior is pretending they’re too cool (and then accidentally melting into a real smile).
It feels relaxed, a little wild, and very real. My favorite combo.

“She made the entire family, including the little kids, feel relaxed and comfortable. Instead of feeling like a stressful portrait session, it was fun and easy. ”
I love the backcountry-feeling roads near NCAR. The kind where you pull over, step out, and suddenly it’s golden grass, mountain air, and kids running like they’ve been released into the wild. In the summer everything glows soft and warm. In the fall the grasses turn that perfect honey color and the Flatirons do their dramatic thing in the background. Even winter has its quiet magic — muted tones, big skies, everyone bundled and snuggly.
Honestly Boulder is stunning in every season but fall is something special. Late September through mid-October the Flatirons turn golden against that impossibly blue Colorado sky and the open spaces near Chautauqua glow warm all evening. Summer is beautiful too - everything is lush and the light stretches late into the evening. Winter has its own quiet magic with big open skies and that crisp mountain air. Spring can be unpredictable but when it's good it's really good - fresh greens and dramatic clouds. My honest answer is whenever your family is ready, Boulder will deliver.
When is the best time of year for family photos in Boulder?
That depends entirely on your family and what feels right for you! My favorite spots in Boulder include Chautauqua Park for that classic Flatirons backdrop, the NCAR trail area for a more wide open backcountry feel, Davidson Mesa for sweeping views of the whole Front Range, and South Boulder Creek for something a little more tucked away and wooded. Pearl Street and the surrounding neighborhoods are beautiful for families who want something more urban and walkable. I always love hearing what kind of setting resonates with you, whether that's wide open mountain views, golden grassy fields, or something with a little more texture and character, and then suggesting the spot that fits your family best. Boulder has no shortage of stunning options and honestly it's hard to go wrong.
Active kids are my favorite kind honestly. Boulder is basically built for them - trails to explore, rocks to climb, fields to run through, dogs to wave at. I never want kids standing still and smiling at a camera anyway. Some of my favorite Boulder shots happen when a kid spots a trail and just takes off - that's when the real magic happens. The more energy your family brings the better the photos usually are.
Our kids are really active, will that be a problem for photos in Boulder?
It can get busy during peak hours which is exactly why timing matters so much. I always recommend golden hour sessions at Chautauqua - about an hour before sunset the crowds thin out, the light goes absolutely magical, and you get that iconic Flatirons backdrop without feeling like you're dodging other visitors the whole time. The NCAR area just south of Chautauqua is also a beautiful less-trafficked alternative that gives you that same wide open Boulder feel with a little more breathing room.
Absolutely - dogs are welcome and honestly they make sessions so much better. Boulder is one of the most dog-friendly cities in Colorado and there are plenty of beautiful spots where your pup can join in. Just let me know ahead of time so I can suggest locations that work well for dogs and help you plan the logistics. Some of my favorite Boulder sessions have featured the family dog front and center!
I photograph weddings and family sessions throughout Northern Colorado, including Estes Park, Fort Collins, Berthoud, Boulder, Longmont, Denver, and the surrounding mountain areas.
